4 Key Rules in achieving your goals…

… Especially when learning a new language!

Every new life experience brings new skills. New skills enrich our lives and make us stronger and more competitive, inspiring for self-development and professional growth. That would be so true in ideal world! In real life we are too busy with every-day routine, slowing our way into the future… Learning a new language can be just the thing to get control over your own life! And here is how:

  1. Always be aware of your goalsWhy and what do I learn?
Learning a new language is a perfect example as it’s easy to remember why you do it! Being able to communicate in a different language opens up so much more possibilities in life, career and anything else you do.
Setting more specific goals also helps to find a most efficient way to achieve them. For example, if you are only about ordering beer in a French bar, a simple audio course may be sufficient. If you would like to be able to carry a casual conversation over this beer, than more structured conversational classes may be required. And if you would like to invite your foreign business partner to this bar to discuss some contract details over a beer, than you need a language instructor and some serious study time! Again, it’s all up to you as long as you know why you are doing this 🙂
  2. Your decision made your wayHow do I learn it?
If you didn’t have a record of being “natural at languages” in your earlier years, it only means that you didn’t see a point in learning one! In other words, you were not motivated enough to do your homework and learn all these foreign words. And now with your goals set firm, this obstacle is out of the way!  Step out of your box and try it again now at your own pace (did you set your time frame, by the way?).
Once you know what exactly your goal is, it’s easy to find a perfect solution: watching TV and reading news in a different language, attending foreign language meet-up groups and forums, or studying with a personal language instructor 4 times a week.

  3. Enjoy your timeIs it really working?
Yes, there are many ways to learn a language. Look back at your school years to see what was the best experience in learning. Was it a group discussion, hours at the library or lab experiments? When you find this magic trigger your mind will happily engage in a new adventure, surprising you with results!
And you must agree that it’s true for most of things in life, not only a foreign language 🙂
  4. Use your knowledgeWelcome the feedback!
They call it a “language barrier” for a reason. It’s not about borders set by governments, it is about our inner psychological barriers keeping us from stepping outside of our comfort zone.
If being perfect in a new language is your goal, you still need to start somewhere, right? So don’t delay the moment as the more feedback you get on your work, the more you learn and improve. And if you just want to chat with pretty Russian girls, no reason to wait either! So be conscious about mistakes you make in your early attempts in a new language, but don’t be discouraged by them, as it’s a great way to learn.
